Acupuncture originated in China and has been practised there successfully for more than 2,000 years, and therefore draws on a rich clinical tradition, uses tried and trusted methods and is systematic in its application. It is a natural way to promote health and wellbeing through the use of fine needles inserted at specific points on the skin, a technique which can be used to treat many conditions from back pain to dental pain.
During treatment very fine needles are inserted into specific points on the body. Inserting needles in this way is considered to help maintain and promote the body’s own innate ability to self-regulate. This is particularly important when these natural mechanisms get thrown out of balance due to lifestyle and environmental factors. If left unchecked, these disturbances may result in some pain and disease symptoms, energy depletion and blockage – all of which can lead to reduced wellbeing. Acupuncture adopts a wholistic approach, which means that the needs of the body, mind and lifestyle are all taken into account during treatment.
Acupuncture can be used by anyone. Each person is assessed and the treatment is tailored to the individual. Treatments may be once a week to begin with, then at longer intervals as the condition responds. A typical course of acupuncture is about 6 sessions.
